Stats show that workplaces across the UK are full of vulnerable employees with 1 in 4 admitted they’ve felt suicidal at work and over a fifth feel like they don’t have anyone at work they feel comfortable talking to if they were struggling with their mental health. To play our part in supporting the nation, we are launching a vital awareness-raising campaign, ‘9 to Alive’, to address the lack of legislation around mental health and suicide in the workplace. We are campaigning for change, calling on legislators and workplaces to make suicide prevention mandatory in existing health & safety policies. □ We are therefore calling on businesses to become more accountable and put as much energy into suicide prevention as they do their fire escapes □ Whilst fire drills & signs are standard place at work, the UK, unlike many other countries, does not monitor, regulate, or legally recognise work-related suicides – with a person 62 times more likely to die from suicide (1 in 88) than in a fire (1 in 5,447). One of the latest ones, and perhaps the most comprehensive, by Azulay et al (2020), featured in this Forbes article, shows that your chances for entrepreneurial success get higher with each passing year.įrom my own experience, I can state that, normally, starting later gives you the edge on industry experience, emotional intelligence, market credibility, stronger networks, and financial backup. The study shows that the mean age of startup founders in the U.S. Other highlights, as featured in the Forbes article: was 42 years, of high-tech startup founders was 43, and of the rare ultra-fast growth #unicorns (the 1 in 1,000 fastest growing ventures) was 45. The likelihood of success as a founder increases with age until the age of 60, i.e., the older you get, the more likely your chances of success are. A 50-year-old founder is twice as likely to build a thriving enterprise that has either an IPO or a successful acquisition as a 30-year-old founder. The top 0.1% whose ventures have created large enterprises that have experienced extreme success, have held jobs in their industry before starting their own companies. Success at your job is highly correlated with your effectiveness as a founder because people who have already experienced professional success have a higher bar in how they define entrepreneurial success.
